WHY

What if…

What if we could integrate the idea of limitation during the development process?
What if limitation itself could turn into a tool for greater creativity and more in-depth filmmaking?

LIM offers a new generation of filmmakers, already known either for their short films or first features, the opportunity of designing a strong route into feature film production using limitations in their development process.

The scheme is open to 1st, 2nd and 3rd feature film projects, as well as to artists coming from strong theatre, documentary or visual arts backgrounds. Twelve emerging European producers wanting to strengthen their ability to develop projects are coached in parallel and integrate the process.

LIM approach is resolutely both conceptual and pragmatic: use limitation as a strength!

Édito…

LIM | Less is More has been set up to empower a generation of filmmakers intent on opening new avenues and finding new audiences by tackling new issues. Our motto is Igor Stravinsky’s

The more art is bound by limitations, the freer it is“.

We live in an age of over-consumption and deep ecological concern. Humanism is in trouble and society has become almost unable to create meaning. In the meantime, stories lie at the heart of what makes us human. Cinema is a powerful storytelling tool for today, plugged into our dreams and our nightmares, that can contribute to restore our ability to create

LIM uses creative limitations as a tool. Its spirit and ambition far exceed the facile business of restricting budgets. Self-imposed limitations help dig deep into character and emotion. They are a catalyst for wall-breaking film-experiences.

In this way, clever limitation strategies help bring out a filmmaker’s unique imprint, giving his or her work a strong advantage in an overcrowded market. Obviously also, introducing limitations early in the writing processes multiplies a film’s chances of being shot soon.

The job of a screenwriter is thus to streamline apparent complexity. A well-understood limitation strategy triggers strong formal choices that can help make the games of a private imagination meaningful to all.

End of 2025, LIM becomes LIM2. The tools and methodology LIM uses will benefit from a very strong upgrade brought by a collaboration with the best European researchers in the cognitive science of creativity. This upgrade is built on visualization and collaborative techniques combined with mapping tools, including a conception phase supported by spatial cognition, sound input and orality. Within LIM, The StoryTANK (Storytank.eu) is the first European Think Tank bringing together screenwriters, storytellers and researchers from cognitive and neuroscience labs. This applied research is meant to strengthen European filmmakers’ creativity and collaborative skills to respond to the challenges of the current
